Riverside Park Skate Park
109th Street, lower level of the Park
The Riverside Park Skate Park, opened in 1995, was New York City’s first skate park and was built specifically to appeal to adolescents. The Salvadori Educational Center on the Built Environment, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping inner-city youth understand science and math through hands-on creations, identified twenty-four local high school students to design and build the skate park. Using a $50,000 grant from the National Parks Service and other public and private donations, the teens constructed Riverside Skate Park during a six-week summer project.
The skate park features various skating surfaces, including two half-pipes, and other ramps and rails. The park is open Thursday – Monday from May through October. The hours are 11 am – 7 pm in June, July and August, and in May, September and October the park is open on weekends only from 11 am – 7 pm. Admission is free, but skaters need to have a signed waiver on file in order to skate. Skaters under the age of 18 must have their form signed by a parent or guardian. Helmets, knee pads and elbow pads are required.
