Over a century ago, the Hamilton Fountain provided water for horses and a scenic vantage point overlooking the Park and Hudson River. Today, the Fountain serves as an historic reminder and decorative feature distinct to Riverside Park. However, the Hamilton Fountain and Plaza are in disrepair. The Fountain no longer holds water, and part of the structure is broken. These are long-standing problems that must be solved to preserve history and see the full potential of this special area of the Park.
Riverside Park Fund is embarking upon an initiative to restore the Hamilton Fountain and Plaza. With the support of neighborhood residents and the Parks Department, we plan to refurbish the Fountain and Plaza by repairing the Fountain to working order, repaving the Plaza with hexagonal paving blocks, and planting 4 new Princeton Elms for increased shade. In addition, the marble eagle atop the 102-year old Fountain will be restored to its original condition. We also will add improved seating in the Plaza.
The entire privately-funded project will cost approximately $150,000, including the establishment of a maintenance endowment of $25,000. A neighborhood family has issued a challenge. If we can raise $75,000, they will match our gifts, and the project can be implemented quickly.
Please consider a special membership gift or bench sponsorship for this purpose. Be sure to designate your gift for the Hamilton Fountain!
