THE TROJAN WOMEN
06:30 PM– on Thursday, June 03, 2010

The Hudson Warehouse presents the Trojan Women, a new adaptation by Writer & Director Nicholas Martin-Smith, based on the works of Euripides. With the city of Troy decimated by 10 years of war, the women of Troy are corralled into a refugee camp and await their fate at the hands of a bureaucratic system. In this stark world, the women continue to grasp onto a life that no longer exists. Theirs is a state of constant searching for comfort in a desolate world of suffering. All their men, husbands and sons, have been murdered, except one: Aeneas, the future founder of Rome. In this contemporary adaptation, Martin-Smith creates a piece of work that echoes the choral odes of the original Greek tragedies. Spearheaded by Talthybius, the voice of the Greek occupation, the fate of the women are decided at the hands of soldiers, still hungry for war.
CAUTION: Trojan Women deals with adult themes. Parents are advised it may not be suitable for children under 13.

The Series, sponsored by the specialty foods marketplace Garden of Eden and the omega-3 sports supplement Recoup90, celebrates our fabulous park and represents the rich cultural diversity of the Upper West Side. Bring your picnic basket and blanket and join us. Stick around afterward and watch the fireflies rise up out of the lawn and the stars speckle the sky.
Tonight’s performance is by bassist Ron McClure, who has a practical philosophy about what he does. “Making music begins with doing your job,” he says. “It’s nice if you can be a hot soloist, but do your job first and do it well.” These are words that the bassist has lived by for over 40 years in the jazz music business. McClure has done everything from playing with saxophonists such as Charles Lloyd to being part of pop recordings by the Pointer Sisters and Blood, Sweat and Tears. In between he has played on countless jazz recordings, including 33 sessions and counting for SteepleChase, both as a leader (13 including his most recent release New Moon) and sideman, composed a large number of tunes and even played piano at a New York McDonald’s! McClure appears at Birdland in February, 2010 for the reunion of celebrated ’70s group Lookout Farm, working with saxophonist Dave Liebman, pianist Richie Beirach and drummer Jeff Williams.

THE TROJAN WOMEN
06:30 PM– on Sunday, June 27, 2010
