CYRANO
06:30 PM– on Saturday, July 31, 2010

The Hudson Warehouse presents, Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand and adapted by Joe Hamel. Philosopher, metaphysician, rhymer, brawler, and musician. Lover…by substitution. In this exciting adaptation, the Hudson Warehouse brings to the stage the infamous swordfight on Ovid’s Bridge where Cyrano fights “a hundred men.” The text only refers to this fight off-stage, but here we get to see Cyrano as the master of the rapier, fighting off a mob of hoodlums. Beautifully costumed by Drew Rosene, musical interludes composed by Tom Demenkoff, the talented cast makes this theatre experience something the whole family can enjoy.

ROMEO & JULIET
06:30 PM– on Thursday, August 05, 2010

The Hudson Warehouse presents, Romeo and Juliet, a tragedy written early in the career of playwright William Shakespeare about two young “star-cross’d lovers” whose deaths ultimately unite their feuding families. Romeo and Juliet belongs to a tradition of tragic romances stretching back to antiquity. The plot is based on an Italian tale, translated into verse as The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet by Arthur Brooke in 1562, and retold in prose in Palace of Pleasure by William Painter in 1582. Shakespeare borrowed heavily from both, but developed supporting characters, particularly Mercutio and Paris, in order to expand the plot. Believed to be written between 1591 and 1595, the play was first published in 1597. It was among Shakespeare’s most popular plays during his lifetime. Today, the lead characters are regarded as archetypal young lovers in this outdoor theater performance.

Jazzmobile Summerfest Presents: Wycliffe Gordon
07:00 PM–08:30 PM on Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Born in Waynesboro, Georgia, Gordon was first introduced to music by his late father, Lucius Gordon, a classical pianist and teacher. His interest in the trombone was sparked at age twelve by his elder brother who played the instrument in his junior high school band. Egged on by sibling rivalry, Gordon’s relentless pleading of his parents led to his first trombone. Wycliffe Gordon now enjoys an extraordinary career as a performer, conductor, composer, arranger, and educator, receiving high praise from audiences and critics alike. Gordon tours the world performing hard-swinging, straight-ahead jazz for audiences ranging from heads of state to elementary school students. Gordon received the Jazz Journalists Association 2008, 2007, 2006, 2002 and 2001 Award for Trombonist of the Year, and the Jazz Journalists Association 2000 Critics’ Choice Award for Best Trombone. In addition to a thriving solo career, he tours regularly leading the Wycliffe Gordon Quartet, headlining at legendary jazz venues throughout the world. Gordon is a former veteran member of the Wynton Marsalis Septet, Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and has been a featured guest artist on Billy Taylor’s “Jazz at the Kennedy Center” Series. Gordon’s extensive performance experience includes work with many of the most renowned jazz performers of the past and present.
Gordon is currently working on a collection of trombone quartets, trios and duos to be entitled “Trombone Majesty,” with expected publication in 2010. In addition, his first method book “Basic Training, Exercises and Suggested Studies by Wycliffe Gordon,” a compilation of the materials, exercises and approaches he uses in his teaching and in his own practice regimen, will be released in 2010.
Gordon teamed with trombonist Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic and students in both of their studios at Juilliard in creating and presenting the master class “Two Sides of the Slide” for Jazz at Lincoln Center. Gordon is the youngest member of the U.S. Statesmen of Jazz, and in many tour performances has served and continues to serve as a musical ambassador for the U.S. State Department.

ROMEO & JULIET
06:30 PM– on Thursday, August 12, 2010

Jazzmobile Summerfest Presents: Akiko Tsuruga Quartet
07:00 PM–08:30 PM on Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Hailing from Osaka, Japan, the Hammond organist and pianist, Akiko Tsuruga has been a mainstay in the New York jazz scene since 2001. This talented young organist began playing the organ at the age of three and launched her career in jazz immediately after graduating from the Osaka College of Music. While living in Osaka, she had the opportunity to play with numerous world-renowned jazz musicians from the United States, such as Roy Hargrove, Jeff “Tain” Watts, and Grady Tate, to name just a few. Grady Tate, in particular, had the strongest
influence on her decision to become a professional musician.
More noteworthy, she performed extensively as a member of the Lou Donaldson Quartet and toured throughout the United States. Appearances at Birdland, the Village Vanguard and Carnegie Hall were just one of many highlights she
experienced that year. She concluded her outstanding year by capturing the New Star Award presented by Swing Journal Magazine.
In 2008, she released her 4th CD called “N.Y.C. Serenade” through Mojo Records and featured Jimmy Cobb on drums. This was immediately followed by a three week promotional tour in Japan with her regular trio. Her highly anticipated second North America issued CD, “Oriental Express”(featuring Eric Johnson, Rudy Petschauer and Jerry Weldon) from 18th & Vine Records was released in the summer of 2009 and earned a #15 spot on jazz radio chart. Akiko recently returned to Japan to performed at the Tokyo Jazz Festival with Lou Donaldson.
The performance was featured on a special TV program and was aired nationwide in Japan.

Jazzmobile Summerfest Presents: Jimmy Heath
07:00 AM–08:30 PM on Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Jimmy Heath nicknamed Little Bird, is an American jazz saxophonist, composer and arranger. Jimmy originally played alto saxophone but after the influence of Charlie Parker on his work for Howard McGhee and Dizzy Gillespie in the late 1940s, he earned the nickname “Little Bird” (Parker’s nickname was Bird) and he switched to tenor sax. He returned to work with Miles Davis in 1959. He went on to introduce John Coltrane to Miles. Then with Kenny Dorham and Gil Evans. He recorded extensively as leader and sideman. During the 1960s, he frequently worked with Milt Jackson and Art Farmer. In 1975, he and his brothers formed the Heath Brothers, also featuring pianist Stanley Cowell. Jimmy composed most of the 1956 Chet Baker and Art Pepper album Playboys.
In the 1980s, he joined the faculty of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in the City University of New York. With the rank of Professor, he led the creation of the Jazz Program at Queens College and attracted many outstanding musicians, such as Donald Byrd to the campus. He also served on the Board of the Louis Armstrong Archives on campus and the restoration and management of the Louis and Lucille Armstrong Residence in Corona, Queens, near his home there. Mr. Heath continued his association with the College until recently. In 2004, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Human Letters.
He frequently performs master classes in New York City and teaches his love for the saxophone.

Little Red Lighthouse Festival
08:00 AM–08:00 PM on Saturday, September 25, 2010
Come celebrate the most beloved lighthouse in America, thanks to the children’s book “The Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Grey Bridge” by Hildegard H. Swift, illustrated by Lynd Ward. The Little Red Lighthouse is actually correctly known as the Jeffreys Hook Lighthouse.
The current Jeffrey’s Hook Lighthouse was constructed in 1920 and commissioned in 1921, the second light on this site. Its purpose was to aid the navigation of shipping up the Hudson, the major transportation artery between New York City and the interior ports of Albany, Troy and beyond.
After the George Washington Bridge was constructed in the 1930s it was determined that the lighthouse was no longer needed and it was deactivated in 1947, and was scheduled for demolition. However, the children’s book popularized the little lighthouse dwarfed by the bridge, and the millions of children tho loved The Little Red Lighthouse spoke out saving it from destruction. It was later deeded to New York City.
